Taronga Zoo

OK wild animals are in this post so be careful as you navigate through it.!

Taronga zoo is a place that actually looks after animals and is a not for profit and is heavily into conversation for all sorts of animals around the world.

The displays of these amazing illuminated animals come alive when the sun has set and the lights come on.  I was getting lessons of animal inditifaction, as the excited children shout out the name of a new animal to their respective parents as they go around the zoo.

The link to the Zoo is below

Enjoy some of the animals, I have only uploaded a few on this blog the rest will be uploaded very shortly to https://500px.com/mchphoto2015

Plastics and Jelly fish in the Ocean

I have just had a short walk via a marina in Sri Lanka, but this could any marina around the world. I looked at the water and initially saw some fish, then the small jellyfish, but then looking a little deeper I saw the sad realization that the area had plastic and other debris in it, polystyrene, glass bottles, bottle caps etc. Now, I know there are turtles in this area as there is a small sanctuary on Lavinda beach not to far from where I was standing.

As turtle’s eat jelly fish, but when they look exactly like a white plastic bag, then we have problems. I can see in my minds eye the turtle eating this plastic stuff that mankind put in the water either by accident or deliberately I do not care. Plastic is not fish, turtle or anyone’s food, well would you eat a plastic bag?, Thought not.

The turtle will die eventually, so would we if we keep eating contaminated food.

So why does our sea life eat them, because it looks like food to them.

These photographs I took made me sad and we really have to stop using plastic bags in our lives, in reality we do not need them, there are plenty of alternatives out there. Lets get using the alternatives NOW.

Our Grandparents did not use plastic bags, so why do we have to? Clean out our drawers, cupboards under the sink etc and dispose of those plastic bags ASAP in the correct manner. Why not take them back to the supermarket and get them to dispose of them correctly, after all it is them who are responsible for giving them to us in the billions.

To all you supermarkets, there is no excuse now, stop giving them away or charging for them. Do something else than what the government tells you to do for the sake of the environment and your children’s future on this planet as we are suffering now, just think what your children’s future looks like if we do NOT do anything now.

I wonder which supermarket will be the first to do something different on this front?.

Take them off your inventory list and never order them again. Introduce better ways to carry out shopping home. Force us to do so. Even those plastic bags for life are no good, we want bags that are made to last that do not come out of plastic derived in any form. They are out there, you have to source them for us at a reasonable cost you can do it, you have the teams in place to actually do this, so why are you not doing this?

This blog is moving at the end of May 2017

Hello all

I have now set up a new blog  at www.michaelcrawfordhick.com and as of around the End of May 2017 this blog will be deleted.

On my new blog, there is a lot more travel, and photography posts, as I travel the world on an amazing trip as I have given up my main job and life in the UK to pursue a career as a travel photographer and digital nomad.

I will be also doing some Eco and volunteering projects as I travel, as I want to enjoy life and not be burdened by just earning a living.

You might ask why have I done this?, well initially the weather in the UK was getting me down (not a lot of sunshine), the work situation was hard, could not do what I really want to do and that is Photography full-time.

Here are my social media links, please feel free to drop by or subscribe to any of the feeds that take your interest.  The most active one at present is my Instagram page where I am posting photographs of all kinds of things I see as I travel and events that I attend in Asia.  The main website will expand what I have taken on that day, but due to the slow internet sometimes in Asia, this might take a few extra days to upload a full gallery of photographs.  I aim for everything to be up in 48 hours of an event happening.

I will now have stock photography available to purchase, via my main web site at

http://www.imagesfromaroundtheworld.com and Also at http://www.500pix.com/mchphoto2015

I will be listing where I am going to in the next few months, so if you have a particular photo request please let me know and I will see what I can do.  The next Stop from April 26th is Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

I invite you to subscribe to my blog, as I would welcome comments and look forward to the interaction I get from my readers.

Thank you in advance and please share where possible

Michael Crawford-Hick

Camera Shops – Where are they?

I miss local camera shops, we used to have 6-8 in the Bournemouth area, we now have 1 pro (always too expensive – more than London prices) and one other main camera shop that used to be good, but now hardly stocks anything really photographic. I want to go and browse these stores and look for new ideas and equipment – but sadly the nearest one to me is 30 miles away – This is doing a disservice to the whole photographic Industry and the 2nd hand market.

I even went to London around a month ago for other things and went by the local camera shops that were in London, they have all gone, and I always liked the 2nd hand shop in Tottenham Court road – Gone!

What is the solution? I could open up a camera shop, but it would set me back in the region of £150K with no guarantees and I do not have that kind of money anyway. There is probably a market for a real old fashioned camera shop with knowledgeable staff who love photography. It’s a shame that Jessops brought up all those small independent shops over the last 10-15 years or so.

Sorry my rant for today on photography things, as I have had to order 3 items from 2 separate companies today, where as normally I would have walked into town and purchased it locally today, and I could play this weekend, but no I have to wait for up to 5-7 days to get my goods and I had to pay 2 separate postage charges on top of the item price.

Had I been able to do this locally, then I may have purchased some other items on impulse as I used to use when I went into a camera shop.  I remember when I went to one in London a few years back with the intention of spending around £5-6 on one item, well that went out of the window and eventually I paid around £90 for 6-7 items – talk about impulse buying – but I did use all those items over the next few months so it was not wasted money on things I did not need or want.

People say we get a better deal online, but I beg to differ, as I cannot make an informed choice about the item I want, the camera shop may have a cheaper or more expensive item, but when I touch it, it is better than my original item I needed?.  I cannot get that feel from seeing a description and photo of it in a brochure or online.  I do not know if its right for me.  I also want to discuss it with a sales assistant and get more info out of them about the item, seeing if I am making the right decision what ever the photographic item is.

Not a good day for photography – I want more local camera shops please universe!
